In this post, we are talking about the original Mario Teaches Typing game and how you can download and play it for free today. This is a great game for kids and any nostalgic Millennials that remember using this gem to learn how to type.
About The Mario Teaches Typing Game
This is the first program that actually made a fun game out of learning how to type! You can pick your level of difficulty and your character (Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach). From there, you can pick lessons where you learn everything from individual keys and hand/finger placements to complex sentences while playing fun minigames.
There is a guide near the bottom of the screen reminding you which fingers to use for the keys, and at the end of each mini lesson, you get a handy report card. The report card includes useful information like your words per minute speed, accuracy percentage, and problem keys.
The game itself is quite engaging with quick lessons, bright colors, fireworks, and the ability to graduate from initial outside play to lessons that take place underwater, underground, or even in the clouds. You doesn’t wouldn’t want to jump, kick cartoon turtles, collect coins in the clouds, and swim in the ocean while learning typing skills?
Here’s a video of the basic outside beginner levels of play with me playing as Mario.

Download And Play Mario Teaches Typing
Here is a free download of the same, virus-free game files I used to make my gameplay video.
Playing the game is fairly simple on any computer using the following steps:
- Download the Mario Teaches Typing (Dos 1992) zip file above
- Unzip the Folder
- Open the Mario folder and find the Mario (.exe) application file
- Drag and drop that into your dos emulator (i.e. DosBox)
- Enjoy the game!
