Rogue For Dos (1984) Download And Gameplay

Rogue for Dos is the original single-player dungeon crawler game that inspired an entire genre of what many people refer to as ‘Roguelike’ games. Download Rogue, learn how to play, and watch a sample video here.

Playing The Original Rogue For Home PCs

In this game, you play as a brave treasure hunter of sorts, exploring various levels while trying to stay alive. The graphics and backstory may leave a lot to be desired compared to modern games, but the random map generation with various resources and monsters popping up anywhere means that you never play the same game twice!

The following video shows a sample of me playing the first few levels of Rogue, using the same game files that you can download further down on this post.

Rogue For Dos Levels 1-3. For more Rogue videos, you can check out the DJ Retro Games YouTube channel.

When taken at face value, Rogue is simple and easy to win. Once it draws you in, you discover that it is actually difficult to progress in later levels. Food gets scarce, so it is possible to starve to death. Plus, a mob of monsters can appear at any point, even seeking you out while you try to recover HP from your last battle.

This one definitely deserves its cult following!
